Antonio Gramsci has become, over the years, the most beloved intellectual of left minded thinkers and actors. His views on 'hegemony', 'oreganic intellectuals' and his conceren for 'unity of theory and action' are considered his greatest contributions to the socialist/communist movements. Even left-popularism of these modern days can apply these views. Gramsci had a good s..more

The Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci elaborated the idea of hegemony in the early part of the twentieth century. Gramsci emphasizes how values supportive of dominant interests in society get passed on to the masses and thereby, once accepted by the multitudes, come to reinforce the domination by that elite. Political scientists Dawson, Prewitt, and Dawson state that: 'Hegemonic theory starts with the assumption that government would not be possible unless the strains and tensions associated with..more
Extremely well written, an interesting argument (kind of the anti-Lenin of Marxists), but unconvincing in his arguments about Machiavelli's intentions. He does lay out some very interesting arguments on the idea of hegemony though.

Gramsci is a beautiful writer with deep insight and clear thinking. Might be opaque without an understanding of marxist/historical materialist of concepts of class, superstructure, etc., but Gramsci has a deep understanding of them and their application to new questions. He at times seems idealist, but situates it as merely resisting the temptation of mechanical materialism, which he accuses Bukharin of in Gramscis review his work.

Gramsci is worth reading. Don't like the way left-coms and ultralefts use him though.

Excelente libro.
A brief and limited selection of Gramsci's writings from the prison notebooks and other writings. The overall theme being the interaction between civil society/the masses and the state/the ruling class not solely determined by the material circumstances but by the interaction and relationships between material life and culture that create the power dynamics of the modern contemporary times.
Essential reading for an understanding the cultural marxism that dominates cultural discourse in the West.

“Man can affect his own development and that of his surroundings only so far as he has a clear view of what the possibilities of action are open to him. To do this he has to understand the historical situation in which he finds himself: and once he does this, then he can play an active part in modifying that situation.
